About libraries and library science

This Law determines the status of libraries, legal and organizational basis of activities of libraries and library science in Ukraine. This Law guarantees the right to open entry to information, knowledge, familiarizing with the values of national and world culture, science and education which are stored in libraries.

Section I. General provisions

Article 1. Determination of terms

In this Law the following terms are used in such value:

library - information, cultural, educational institution (organization, the organization) or the structural division having the arranged fund of documents, access to other sources of information and which main task is ensuring information, research, educational, cultural and other needs of users of library;

library depositary - the library providing permanent storage of the library stock created from documents which are seldom used and have scientific and/or art value;

library service - result of activities of library on satisfaction of information, research, educational, cultural and other needs of users of library;

library system of Ukraine - extensive network of libraries of the different types connected by interaction and mutually use of library resources;

library science - the area of information, cultural and educational activities of society directed to creation and development of network of libraries, forming, study, streamlining and storage of library stocks, the organization of library, information and help and bibliographic servicing of users of library, preparation and advanced training of specialists in the field of library science, scientific and methodical ensuring development of library activities;

library stock - the arranged collection of documents which is stored in library;

library resources - the arranged library stocks of documents on different data carriers, databases, network information resources, the help and search device, material means of study, storage and information transfer;

the document - material form of obtaining, storage, use and distribution of information fixed on paper magnetic, film, film, optical disk or other carrier;
