Agreement between the Russian Federation and Azerbaijan Republic on differentiation of adjacent sites of bottom of the Caspian Sea

The Russian Federation and the Azerbaijan Republic which further are referred to as with the Parties

proceeding from the aspiration to develop friendly good-neighbourhood,

considering mutual interest in creation of the contractual legal basis of activities of both Parties for development of mineral resources of subsoil of adjacent sites of bottom of the Caspian Sea,

being guided by the conventional principles and rules of international law, interests of the Parties in case of development and use of mineral resources of subsoil of adjacent sites of bottom of the Caspian Sea, the existing practice on the Caspian Sea,

understanding the responsibility before present and future generations for preserving the Caspian Sea and integrity of its unique ecological system,

recognizing importance of observance of special ecological requirements in case of investigation and development of mineral resources of the Caspian Sea,

in view of the reached two-way deals concerning legal status of the Caspian Sea,

agreed as follows:

Article 1

1. The bottom of the Caspian Sea and its subsoil are differentiated between the Parties on the basis of method of the median line drawn taking into account the equidistance of points and modified by agreement of the Parties, and also taking into account the conventional principles of international law and the practice which developed on the Caspian Sea.

2. This agreement establishes geographical coordinates of passing of this Article of the line of demarcation of adjacent sites of bottom of the Caspian Sea determined according to Item 1 between the Russian Federation and the Azerbaijan Republic for the purpose of implementation of the sovereign rights concerning mineral resources and other lawful economic economic activity connected with subsurface use at the bottom.
