Article 1. Legislation on seismic protection

1. The relations connected with ensuring seismic protection are regulated by this Law, international treaties of the Republic of Armenia, and also other laws and legal acts.

2. If the international treaty in the field of seismic protection establishes other regulations, than the legislation, then regulations of the international treaty are applied.

Article 2. Basic concepts of this Law

1. In this Law the following basic concepts are used:

earthquake - the fluctuations of the Earth's surface caused by distribution of seismic waves;

strong earthquake - earthquake which force exceeds 5,5 of points on scale of magnitudes of Richter;

seismic protection - the legal, social, economic, educational, organizational, scientific, technical and other special events aimed at providing seismic safety and stable development of the state and society;

seismic danger - threat of possible strong earthquake in the territory which is estimated according to the procedure, established by the Government of the Republic of Armenia and (or) other legal acts;

seismic division into districts (zoning) - mapping of geographical distribution of the greatest possible seismic danger in the territory (general seismic division into districts, detailed seismic division into districts, seismomicrodivision into districts);

seismic situation - general characteristic of the current seismic danger from the point of view of seismic protection;

seismic risk - the human, material losses, losses of cultural values and other possible losses caused by strong earthquake;
